Dr. Rather G. Brown Scholarship
2026–2027 Scholarship Application
The Dr. Rather G. Brown Scholarships are based primarily on scholarship merit and leadership potential. Each scholarship is granted in the amount of $2,500 toward the 2026-2027 academic year ($1,250.00 for fall semester of 2026 and $1,250.00 for spring semester 2027).
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Dr. Rather G. Brown Scholarship, the following applies to all applicants:
- Must be a graduating high school senior enrolled in the Madison County area. (Huntsville City Schools, Madison City Schools, Madison County Schools or a private/parochial institution)
- Must have an ACT score of 18 above
OR
- A current undergraduate AAMU student in good standing
- Must have a continuous GPA of 2.50 or above and have completed 15 semester credit hours
Guidelines and Priorities
All scholarship application packets MUST include:
- Official transcript (all applicants)
- Completed application with signed Affirmation Statement
- Scholarship Essay (See Below)
- Typed Essay – Prepare an essay (Arial Font, 12 pt, 500 words maximum) that addresses the following topic: Explain the significant role Alabama A&M University plays in the Huntsville/Madison County community highlighting specific ways you have experienced this role on the local, state or national level.
- Video Essay – Upload a 2 – 3 minute video essay addressing the following topic: Explain the significant role Alabama A&M University plays in the Huntsville/Madison County community highlighting specific ways you have experienced this role on the local, state or national level
- Typed personal statement (Arial Font, 12 pt, 250 words maximum)
- Describe yourself and include your hobbies, educational goals, career goals and how this scholarship will benefit you in attaining those goals. Please be specific with your response.
- Two letters of recommendation on official letterhead
- High School applicants must provide a letter from a high school counselor or teacher. The second letter from a person of choice in the community (examples include clergy, mentor, coach, advisor, supervisor)
- AAMU undergraduate students must provide at least one of the two recommendation letters from a professor, advisor, or dean currently employed at Alabama A&M University. The second letter from a person of choice in the community (examples include clergy, mentor, coach, advisor, supervisor)
Submission
Deadline: Friday, March 13, 2026
Online submissions must be completed by the deadline.
Mailed packets must be postmarked by the deadline.

Packets received after the deadline will not be considered. Incomplete packets will not be considered.
Award Notification & Verification
Recipients will be notified by April 10, 2026 and recognized prior to the end of the 2026 academic school year.
Scholarship awards are issued after verification of enrollment and registration at Alabama A&M University. Failure to provide verification of enrollment and registration will result in forfeiture of the scholarship.
